Immigration FAQs

What is the difference between a green card and a visa?
A visa is a temporary authorization to enter or stay in the U.S. for a specific purpose and time period. A green card (permanent resident card) grants you the right to live and work permanently in the United States. Green card holders can eventually apply for citizenship after meeting residency requirements.
How long does the green card process take?
Processing times vary significantly based on the category and your country of birth. Family-based green cards for immediate relatives of U.S. citizens can take 12–24 months. Employment-based and other family categories may take several years due to visa backlogs. We can give you a more specific estimate during your consultation.
Can I work while my green card application is pending?
Yes, in most cases. When you file Form I-485 (Adjustment of Status), you can simultaneously file Form I-765 for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Once approved, you can work legally while your green card application is pending.
What happens if I receive a Request for Evidence (RFE)?
An RFE is a request from USCIS for additional information or documentation. It is not a denial. You have a specific deadline to respond (usually 87 days). We help clients prepare thorough RFE responses. For complex RFEs, we may recommend connecting you with a partner attorney.
Do I need a lawyer for my immigration case?
Not always. Many straightforward cases (green card renewals, DACA renewals, naturalization) can be handled with professional document preparation services like Teranga. However, cases involving removal proceedings, criminal history, prior deportations, or complex legal issues require a licensed immigration attorney. We will always tell you honestly when you need a lawyer and connect you with one.
